History

J.C. Penney Company got its start in Kemmerer, Wyoming in 1902. Founder James Cash Penney opened The Golden Rule Store with partners Thomas Callahan and Guy Johnson. Penney opened a second store in 1904 which is still open today. Penney bought his partners’ shares and by 1913 J.C. Penney Company was incorporated.

JC Penney issued its first catalog in 1963. At this time, they had more product lines, including sporting goods and home electronics. These product lines were removed in the late 1980s when the company sought to reach a more defined market. In 1998, JC Penney launched its website – www.jcpenney.com – making their inventory of clothing, accessories and home goods more accessible to a growing online community.
